Tell us a little about yourself.
I’ve had a lot of great outdoor jobs that have been like hobbies. I was a whitewater raft guide, ski instructor, and canoe trip leader. I’m currently an English teacher and lighthouse keeper at the Nubble Lighthouse in York. Now, I spend most of my unoccupied hours shivering in the stands at youth sports for football, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball for my kids. On winter weekends I like to ride ski lifts and chase my kids downhill.

How and when did you first discover CrossFit?
I never stuck with a fitness program, but when I turned 35 I told myself I would start a serious fitness program before I turned 40. On March 17, 2014, I started at CrossFit 207, the day before I turned 40. When I saw what CrossFit is, I was pretty sure it was way too hard for me, but I was wrong, and I love it. On the day I checked out CrossFit 207, Jaimee told me that it would change my life; she was right.

How has CrossFit helped you?
Everything I love to do is physically demanding. I’ve dealt with many knee injuries and a few years ago I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to ski with my kids for much longer. I had pretty much given up on being strong or fit. Crossfit has changed all that. Over time my knee pain has decreased, I’m stronger than I ever was, and I learned to do things that I never thought I could.  I ski harder than I ever did and I feel better than I ever thought I would.  It has also been an awesome activity to do with my sons, Kai and Max. Completing the Open with Kai this year was so much fun and personally fulfilling.

What is your favorite thing about the gym/Crossfit?
My favorite thing about Crossfit 207 is the people. It doesn’t matter what time of day you come in, the people are awesome. The people I get to work out with motivate me to come to the gym even when I don’t feel like working out.  The positive comments and good vibes that everyone has for each other inspires me to be my best. My heart is with the morning crew. My favorite days are when I pull into the parking lot and see a lot of cars. Those are the days when all my friends are there, but the morning crew just won’t be complete until we get The Sarge back.

Least favorite exercise: Turkish Get-ups. They feel so terrible.

Anything else to add:
A huge thank you to the trainers at Crossfit 207. It is so powerful to have phenomenal athletes who are also great people there to share their expertise and push me to try new things. Each of them has taught me something different, and for that I am thankful. They take so much time to get to know us and our capabilities to help us all accomplish more. When I stop to think about it, I am filled with gratitude for all that they have done for me. Really, it has changed my life.
